Eliminating Discipline in Safety for Success

The word discipline has a negative connotation. When an employee is to be disciplined it brings up memories of childhood when they were punished. Because of this negative feeling the employee tends to shut down, become resentful, and gains very little benefit from the process. The true purpose of a process should be to change behavior rather than to punish. What if there was a way that the employee could be involved in the process and not feel as if they were being punished.

Change the language, change the attitude. Through what is known as a Resolutionary Process, both employee and manager benefit from the end result. This happens from turning confrontation into agreement and an adversarial mindset into team work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the #1 barrier to behavior change in safety.
  • Target specific mindsets for change.
  • Understand the strategy of how and why to ask questions.
  • Create employee initiated solutions.
  • Use accountability as a cost reduction too.l
