Is Your Emergency Department Adding to the Emergency? Developing Forward-Thinking Emergency Departments That Plan for the Unexpected

June 9, 2010
1:30 - 3:00 PM (Eastern)

*Due to popular demand, this is a pre-recorded replay of this Audio Conference. If you have any questions after the conference, you may contact the presenter directly.

How do you plan an Emergency Department today that won’t be ready and built until a few years from now? How do you take into account what healthcare will be like in a few years, when we don’t even know how the industry will change? Will there be universal coverage? Will the ED be strictly for emergencies, or will it continue to be the main point of service for millions of uninsured people?

What you plan today will determine if your Emergency Department becomes a center of financial success or a money-sucking drain to your hospital.

How do you plan for the unknown?

Without proper planning, an ED built today stands the risk of being dangerously outdated within even a few years. This could mean at best that the ED will be inefficient, wasting time, money and resources that the hospital can’t afford to squander. At worst, it could cost patients their lives.

There are new ideas out there—ideas that will lead to optimum sustainability in Emergency Department design—and now you can hear about ideas that haven’t even left the architect’s drawing board yet and take them to your own drawing board.

Using information gathered from completed projects, projects still in the works, and interviews with industry leaders who are forging the way in ED design and concepts, architect and healthcare consultant Matthew Kennedy will examine steps you can take now to avoid crises in the future. He’ll look at what’s working, what current trends are, and many of the possible outcomes in the uncertain future of healthcare.

Don’t waste your time and resources planning facilities that won’t stand up to real emergencies and real healthcare needs in the future. Join us for this forward-thinking assessment of flexible strategies for meeting healthcare’s ever changing needs.

Learning Objectives:

  • How do issues such as cost containment and universal coverage impact facility design and development for emergency departments?
  • What can we learn from the specific design strategies that others are using to meet future needs that are still being defined? What are their implications for other projects?
  • How can you translate and apply these ideas effectively into the design strategy for your next ED project?

Presented by:
